From Benifallet to Xerta
Reaching the weir ("azud")
The Ebro has left behind Barrufemes Gorge and continues its tortuous journey to the sea, now more calm in a sensational place. We will see a really wide Ebro and we will cross the river sluice through the navigation channel.

We see from the water, "Coll de Som" on the left, which is where the road formerly got Tortosa, before the Benifallet Bridge. On the right the foothills of the Ports Massif. We also let the Cardo Hills, a place where you need to return some day for a walk because it is an unknown and very worthwhile. Sure that one day you must climb the Mont Caro, the highest peak of the Ports and witnessed the passage of different cultures and civilizations. Like others in the area, the journey is full of remains of Iberian settlements, since the hills above the river were privileged places. The strategic location also favored quarry and cement plant on the banks of the river. We will see the rests. The proximity of the river, which was once the only way of communication was the reason for this location. For those who never crossed a river sluice, this will be the highlight of our journey. After the navigation channel, we enter the sluice and the door gets locked to let us down 7 meters, which separate us from the height of the river at the exit. This break of nearly 30 minutes, will be a good thing for the final part of our route and see the orange and lemon trees, famous of this land. When getting out of the sluice, we will see how the weir ("azud") looks like: Its origin is arab and is the starting point of Channels Right and Left of the Ebro, which are essential in providing water to the land Delta. It is possible to make a stop or end up in Tivenys village, only 20 minutes from our final Xerta. |
